Program Topics

1. Roadmap to Success

Following a roadmap helps you get from one place to another. In this seminar, you'll learn the Market-Step process - the sequence of steps from idea to launch. An overview of the entire process is presented while focusing in this seminar from the product planning stage to launch. We'll go through the process with a series of discussions, examples, and exercises.

2. Market Planning

Market Planning involves the complete thinking through of product marketing details from the customer's perspective. This is a key step to taking your invention and turning it into a sought-after product. We'll cover the important concept of positioning, price setting, and marketing communications strategies.

3. Getting into Retailers and Distributors

While you might sell direct, we'll cover the advantages and disadvantages of selling your product through retailers and distributors. You'll learn what retailers are looking for, who to contact, and how to prepare and submit a presentation package.

4. Branding and Themes

Branding is an important marketing device to give your product a special identity. You'll learn how to create a brand and come up with clever product names. In addition, you'll create a theme to form the basis for your marketing communications.

5. Packaging

Packaging can be just as important as the product itself. Shoppers often make assumptions and purchase decisions based on the packaging. You’ll discover the different types of packaging, the steps to create packaging, and attractive designs to make your product stand out from the crowd.

6. Product Development Planning

As the saying goes, plan your work, then work your plan. The first element to development planning is to know your customer’s needs and wants. We’ll convert those needs and wants into product requirements using a structured process. Then, you’ll learn how to work with designers to make your idea take shape. In addition, we’ll uncover if there is a need to pass regulations and acquire certifications. You’ll discover the certification testing process and how organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories operate.

7. Product Development

In the development stage we’ll take your plans and bring them to life. You’ll either use this information to build your product yourself, or gain the knowledge to effectively find and work with designers and manufacturers. We’ll cover specifications, bill of materials, test cases, documentation, and production.

8. Beta Testing

A beta testing program is very useful to fine-tune product functionality and to uncover bugs. We’ll start by creating a beta test plan to clarify your goals and objectives. Then we’ll discuss methods to recruit beta candidates, the beta site agreement, and methods to solicit feedback. With this data we’ll summarize the results and determine what product changes are needed and which can be placed on hold.

9. Product Launch

Launch means introducing your product into the market. Some people use the term launch interchangeably with commercialize, first customer ship, general availability, or product kickoff. We’ll cover what is needed to finalize your product to make it ready for selling. We’ll discuss how to create awareness with publicity, build trust with advertising, effectively use direct mail, and selling tactics.

10. Funding Your Idea

Money allows you to develop, market, and sell your product idea. You'll need money for market research, equipment, prototype development, and more. We'll discuss the types of funding, who the investors are, how to attract investors, how they'll evaluate you, SBA loans, and other funding possibilities.
